Isla de los Pájaros
Protected islet in Nuevo Gulf, Isla de los Pájaros brings together cormorants, Magellanic penguins and terns in the heart of Valdés Peninsula (UNESCO). Observation from a land-based viewpoint or on a boat excursion.
In the heart of Nuevo Gulf, within the bay of Valdés Peninsula (Argentine Patagonia), Isla de los Pájaros is a flat, rocky islet classified as a complete natural reserve. Landing is forbidden; observation is possible from the shore or by boat. Colonies of cormorants, Magellanic penguins and terns nest here in large numbers, making this site one of Patagonia's densest ornithological stops.

What you'll see
The islet is home to several species simultaneously: royal cormorants and Magellanic cormorants, Magellanic penguins, elegant terns and Patagonian gulls. From the viewpoint, fixed telescopes allow observation of nests a few hundred meters away. By boat, you navigate the low cliffs where birds cluster in dense colonies, indifferent to passing vessels.
History and context
Valdés Peninsula has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999 for its exceptional marine biodiversity. Isla de los Pájaros has benefited from complete natural reserve status since the 1970s: no infrastructure has ever been built there, which preserves the breeding cycles of nesting species.
Highlights of your visit
The land-based viewpoint
An equipped overlook facing the islet offers a clear view. Telescopes installed on-site allow you to make out nests and observe bird behavior without disturbing the colonies. Access is quick and suitable for all types of visitors.
The boat excursion
Boats departing from Puerto Pirámides sail around the islet at close range. You'll hear the cries of the colonies, the distinctive smell of guano deposits and the diving of cormorants. Some outings combine bird watching with sightings of southern right whales (July to December).
Photography tips
From the viewpoint, a telephoto lens (300 mm minimum) is essential for isolating subjects. Morning light, low and golden, enhances plumage. By boat, prioritize a fast shutter speed to capture diving birds. Avoid midday: light is harsh and birds are less active.
